Opt In I: Beyond the Basics - Trans Legal Issues 201 featuring Trystan Reese.
12:10pm - 1:20pm, October 17
Location: McCarty Classroom Complex, Room 3
Trystan is a professional facilitator who has trained law firms, nonprofits, small businesses, and school communities on the principles of trans competency. He is the director of family formation at Family Equality, the nations leading nonprofit dedicated to supporting LGBT families and those who wish to form them. He lives in Portland with his family. Utilizing his signature warm, “no judgment” style, Trystan will ensure Lewis & Clark attendees master basic terminology commonly used within the trans community, including delving into the larger constructs underpinning the major concepts. Participants will emerge understanding the ways in which transphobia and the law affect the trans community, and will learn what concrete actions they can take to serve as positive professional colleagues and representation to their trans colleagues and clients. Using a specific three-step process, participants will learn how to “retrain their brains” to use new language when referring to a trans person (such as in cases where a coworker or client has changed their name or pronouns, or in the instance of gender-neutral pronouns). To address some of the specific interest participants may have about the process of transitioning, the session will cover the available options for medical, social, and legal transition for individuals in Oregon, in addition to providing insight into practical ways attorneys and support staff can best serve trans clients. There will be myriad opportunities for questions and answers, so no participant leaves the session holding onto any mysteries about the trans community. Lunch, sponsored by the Office of Equity & Inclusion, will be provided to students, faculty, and staff who REGISTER HERE by Wednesday, October 9, 2019.
